We should be careful with the gender of other people, with what we think they are and should be, with our ideas about bodies, with our desire for protection. Which lives count? Who defines belonging? Which bodies deserve protection? Who is visible? Who do we not see?
Gender differentiation plays a significant role in media reporting, and since the 2017 ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court on the ‘third option,’ gender is no longer just binary. Gender is a multidimensional space, the dimensions of which we do not yet fully understand. We know that genetic, anatomical, hormonal, environmental and psychological factors influence gender, either through their combined existence or through interaction.
