Whether it’s battle rap, new school, boombap, or spoken word: LILA SOVIA can do it all. The newcomer from Hamburg, recently awarded the Krach und Getöse Nachwuchspreis 2024 and the Klopstock Prize for young poetry, has been performing throughout Germany since 2022 at Dockville, Fusion, Schwuz, and as the opening act for Kafvka, Trille, and Waving the Guns.

With a tongue like a knife, a distinctive purple mullet, and lyrics that hit the nail on the head, the nonbinary artist Deutschrap always puts her finger precisely where it hurts. And with great success. Sold-out release shows, 10,000 monthly listeners, and almost as many fans on Instagram. LILA SOVIA consistently strikes a chord with the zeitgeist in their lyrics, backed live by Cyrus Lawton’s groovy fretless baselines, freestyle acapella parts, and danceable, highly political songs from “Alle meine Freunde sind trans” to “Süssmaus.”

LILA SOVIA is perhaps the most interesting newcomer in the German-speaking world, because many can rap, but saying something meaningful has become rare.
